The GMAT is scored on a 205–805 scale (GMAT Focus Edition, 2023 onwards) or 200–800 (Classic GMAT). The average GMAT score globally is around 565 (classic) or 525 (Focus). For Indian students applying to top MBA programs abroad, the competitive benchmarks are higher.
The GMAT Focus Edition launched in 2023 with three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Data Insights. The AWA section was removed. The total score range changed from 200–800 to 205–805. A score of 655 on GMAT Focus is approximately equivalent to 700 on the Classic GMAT.
Indian applicants — particularly those with IT or engineering backgrounds — form one of the largest applicant pools for top MBA programs. Because of this, Indian applicants sometimes need scores 10–20 points higher than the class median to be competitive. Demonstrating leadership, international experience and a compelling story beyond the GMAT is crucial.
