Most Indian universities grade on a 10-point CGPA scale, while universities in the USA, Canada and some European countries use a 4.0 GPA scale. The standard conversion formula is: GPA = (CGPA ÷ Maximum CGPA) × 4. For example, if your CGPA is 7.5 on a 10-point scale, your GPA = (7.5 ÷ 10) × 4 = 3.0.
This linear conversion is accepted by the majority of universities for initial screening. However, for official purposes, universities like MIT, Stanford and CMU may require a credential evaluation from WES (World Education Services) or ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators).
The most widely used formula, recommended by Anna University and adopted by most Indian universities, is: Percentage = (SGPA × 10) – 7.5. So an SGPA of 8.5 gives a percentage of (8.5 × 10) – 7.5 = 77.5%.
Some universities use a simpler formula: Percentage = SGPA × 9.5, which gives slightly different results. Always check your university's official guidelines before submitting to foreign institutions.
| CGPA (10-pt) | GPA (4.0) | Percentage | Grade | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.5 – 10.0 | 3.80 – 4.00 | 92–100% | A+ | Exceptional — Top-tier universities |
| 8.5 – 9.49 | 3.40 – 3.79 | 82–92% | A | Excellent — Strong for any university |
| 7.5 – 8.49 | 3.00 – 3.39 | 72–82% | B+ | Good — Competitive for most programs |
| 6.5 – 7.49 | 2.60 – 2.99 | 62–72% | B | Average — Address in SOP |
| 5.5 – 6.49 | 2.20 – 2.59 | 52–62% | C | Below average — Strong GRE/work exp needed |
Most US universities accept a converted GPA for initial applications. However, some universities specify that they require a WES evaluation before final admission. Indian IIT and NIT grades are widely recognised and often evaluated more generously due to the reputation of these institutions.
A 7.5 CGPA converts to approximately 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. This is generally competitive for good US universities, though schools like MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgia Tech typically expect 3.5+ GPA (equivalent to 8.75+ CGPA). A strong GRE score (320+) can compensate for a slightly lower CGPA at many universities.
German universities use a unique inverted grading system (1.0 is best, 4.0 is passing). The modified Bavarian Formula is used for conversion: German Grade = 1 + 3 × (Max – Your CGPA) ÷ (Max – Min). A CGPA of 8.0 on a 10-point scale typically converts to approximately 2.0–2.3 on the German scale, which is considered "good" (gut).
