Most Indian students spend weeks preparing for IELTS but spend only minutes on the registration process — then discover they booked the wrong test version, chose a date too close to their application deadline, or do not know what to bring on test day. This guide covers every step of IELTS registration in India in 2025.
- Test fee: Approximately ₹16,250 (British Council) / ₹16,250 (IDP) — 2025 rates
- Test frequency: Available almost every week in major cities
- Results: 3–5 days (computer-based) / 13 days (paper-based)
- Resit: No cooling-off period — you can retake immediately
- Validity: 2 years from test date
- Major centres: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Kochi, Chandigarh
Step 1: Choose Academic or General Training
This is the most critical decision. Get it wrong and your score is invalid for your purpose.
- IELTS Academic: For university degree programs anywhere in the world
- IELTS General Training: For Canada/Australia/New Zealand PR immigration, and UK work and settlement visas
- IELTS UKVI (Academic or General): Required specifically for UK Student Visa applications — same test content but taken at UKVI-approved centres and reported to UKVI's database
If you are applying to a UK university AND need a UK Student Visa, you need IELTS UKVI Academic — not standard IELTS Academic. This is a common and expensive mistake.
Step 2: Choose British Council or IDP
Both administer the identical IELTS examination. Your score from British Council is exactly equivalent to your score from IDP. The test content, band descriptors, and certificate are interchangeable. The only practical differences:
- Test centre locations: Check which provider has a centre closer to you, or in a more convenient city
- Date availability: Both offer multiple test dates per month — compare availability for your target window
- Online booking UX: Both have serviceable booking websites; IDP's interface is often considered marginally cleaner
- IELTS UKVI: Both providers offer UKVI-approved test centres, but availability may differ by city
Step 3: Book Your Test Date Strategically
Working backwards from your application or visa deadline:
- Allow 2 weeks buffer after your test date for results (computer-based results: 3–5 days; paper-based: 13 days)
- Allow at least 4 weeks between your test date and any application deadline — enough time to retake if needed
- Book 6–8 weeks before you want to sit the test — popular dates at major centres fill up, especially October–December when UK application deadlines cluster
- If applying for UK November Chevening deadline: sit IELTS no later than late September
- If applying for Canada SDS: allow time for study permit processing (20–30 days) after test results
Step 4: The Registration Process (Step by Step)
- Go to britishcouncil.in/exam/ielts or idp.com/india
- Click "Register for IELTS" and create an account with your email
- Select: Test type (Academic / General Training / IELTS UKVI) → Test format (Computer / Paper) → City → Date → Test centre
- Upload: Passport-quality photo (white background, clear face) + valid ID scan (passport preferred; Aadhaar accepted at most centres)
- Pay: ₹16,250 by credit/debit card or net banking
- Receive booking confirmation email — save this. It contains your candidate number and test centre address.
