The IELTS band scale runs from 0 to 9. But what each band actually means — in terms of English proficiency, what programs it unlocks, and what real-world level it represents — is poorly understood by most Indian students preparing for the test. This guide decodes every band from 5.0 to 9.0, maps each to CEFR levels, and tells you exactly which universities and visa categories it opens.
- 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking — each scored 0–9
- Overall band: Average of 4 sections, rounded to nearest 0.5
- No passing score: Each institution sets its own minimum
- Validity: 2 years from test date
- Band increments: 0.5 steps (5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, 7.0, 7.5, 8.0, 8.5, 9.0)
The Complete Band Score Chart
| Band | CEFR | Descriptor | What It Means in Practice |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0 | C2+ | Expert User | Complete operational command. Equivalent to an educated native speaker. Only ~1% of test-takers achieve this. |
| 8.5 | C2 | Very Good User | Fully fluent with occasional minor slips. Handles complex language naturally. Rare — approximately 2% of candidates. |
| 8.0 | C1+ | Very Good User | Fully operational command. Minor inaccuracies that do not impede communication. Required for Oxford/Cambridge law and medicine. |
| 7.5 | C1 | Good User | Good command with occasional inaccuracies. Required for most Oxford/Cambridge programs. Strong for all destinations. |
| 7.0 | C1 | Good User | Effective command despite some inaccuracies. Standard for LSE, Imperial, UCL, most top-50 universities globally. |
| 6.5 | B2+ | Competent User | Generally effective command. Most Russell Group UK, Go8 Australian, and European university programs. The most common threshold. |
| 6.0 | B2 | Competent User | Generally effective despite inaccuracies. Canada SDS minimum. Many mid-tier university programs. |
| 5.5 | B1+ | Modest User | Partial command. UK Student Visa minimum for most programs. Australia student visa minimum. Some pathway programs. |
| 5.0 | B1 | Modest User | Limited command in familiar situations. Generally insufficient for direct university admission abroad. |
Band Score Distribution: Where Indian Test-Takers Land
Based on ETS and British Council data, the average IELTS Academic overall band score for Indian test-takers is approximately 6.5. The distribution shows:
- Below 6.0: ~18% of Indian test-takers
- 6.0–6.5: ~35% of Indian test-takers (the largest group)
- 7.0: ~25% of Indian test-takers
- 7.5 and above: ~15% of Indian test-takers
- 8.0 and above: ~7% of Indian test-takers
Indian test-takers typically score highest in Listening (~6.9 average) and lowest in Writing (~6.1 average). The Writing gap is the most common reason Indian students fall short of their overall target — a 6.0 in Writing pulls the average down even with strong scores elsewhere.

How the Overall Band Is Calculated
Your overall IELTS band is the mean of your four section scores, rounded to the nearest 0.5. Examples:
- L:7.0 + R:7.0 + W:6.0 + S:7.0 = 27.0 ÷ 4 = 6.75 → rounds to 7.0
- L:7.5 + R:7.0 + W:6.0 + S:7.0 = 27.5 ÷ 4 = 6.875 → rounds to 7.0
- L:7.0 + R:6.5 + W:6.0 + S:6.5 = 26.0 ÷ 4 = 6.5 → rounds to 6.5
- L:8.0 + R:7.5 + W:6.0 + S:7.5 = 29.0 ÷ 4 = 7.25 → rounds to 7.5
This rounding means a 6.0 in Writing pulls your overall band down significantly. A student scoring 7.5 in all other sections but 6.0 in Writing gets an overall band of 7.0 — and if their target is 7.5, they need to improve Writing despite being strong in everything else.
The Most Strategic Band to Target
For most Indian students with study abroad goals, the highest-leverage target is IELTS 7.0 each band. This single score:
- Qualifies you for admission to the vast majority of programs at top-100 global universities
- Meets the UK visa requirement (via IELTS UKVI)
- Qualifies for Canada SDS (faster study permit processing)
- Gives CLB 8 in all four skills for Canada Express Entry (128 CRS language points)
- Gives Proficient English status for Australian Skilled Migration (15 points)
- Meets the German and Dutch university standard
Targeting 7.5+ adds marginal admission value for most programs but significantly more preparation time. Unless you are targeting Oxford, Cambridge, or a program with a specific 7.5 minimum, 7.0 each band is the optimal stopping point.
